No Separate Flag and Constitution: Amit Shah to S C Jamir on Naga Peace Issue

First Published: 8th November, 2024 15:01 IST

Centre has categorically refused to give in to the demand for separate Flag and Constitution as a solution to the Naga issue.

Former Nagaland Chief Minister and veteran political leader SC Jamir has made a big statement. Speaking exclusively to Northeast Live Editor in Chief Wasbir Hussain, Dr Jamir, who called on Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Wednesday, said that the Centre has categorically refused to give in to the demand for separate Flag and Constitution as a solution to the Naga issue.

Jamir said that as per Home Minister Shah, the issue of separate flag and constitution is non-negotiable. There can be only one flag, one constitution and one PM in India, Jamir said adding that separate flag and constitution are attributes of sovereignty. Asked about the future of the peace talks now, Dr Jamir said it’s up to the NSCN-IM to take a call. Here is the full transcript of the interview.

Wasbir Hussain: You recently met the Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi, that was day before yesterday. What was the meeting all about?

Dr SC Jamir: I only asked him about one clarification; Whether Flag and Constitution are negotiable or not. But he said NO, nothing. It’s very clear. In India there is only one Prime Minister, One Flag, One Constitution. That’s all.

Wasbir Hussain: Then what is the solution? What is the road ahead? What is going to happen to the Naga Peace process is concerned, particularly the NSCN-IM?

Dr SC Jamir: Well, it is entirely up to the NSCN-IM. Naga people are just waiting for solution. And when it is not possible, why should we go on wasting time? What is possible I think we should accept it. And what is not possible we should ignore it.

Wasbir Hussain: What suggestion did you give the Union Home Minister?

Dr SC Jamir: He doesn’t require any suggestion; when they have already signed, and there is ‘No Integration, No Sovereignty’. And Flag and Constitution these are attributes of a sovereign independent country in itself. So if it is within Indian Union, Indian Constitution, I don’t think GoI will ever agree to that.

Wasbir Hussain: So finally, Dr Jamir, do you think that the talks will progress now? You are saying that that HM has very clearly said ‘No’ to Flag and Constitution. That’s what you are saying.
Do you think that the talks will progress now or will it be a stalemate?

Dr SC Jamir: Well, it is entirely up to the parties concerned. Now, if there is a will, it can be done. Because they should also know that people are tired. They are fed up with this kind of non-solution to the problem and underground people also should know what is possible and what is not possible.

Wasbir Hussain: Right! And did you meet anybody else? You met only the Union HM or did you meet somebody else?

Dr SC Jamir: I went only to meet him.
