NFR Deploys Advanced Tech for Landslide and Stability Management in Lumding-Badarpur Hill Section

In a significant step towards strengthening railway safety and infrastructure resilience, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has deployed state-of-the-art technology to address challenges related to landslides, drainage issues, and embankment stability along the Lumding–Badarpur Hill Section in Assam.
This crucial section, which spans the hilly terrain of Dima Hasao and Cachar districts, serves as a vital rail link connecting the states of Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur, and the Barak Valley of Assam with the rest of India. The difficult topography and extreme monsoon conditions in this region make it particularly susceptible to natural hazards, often disrupting rail traffic and posing significant safety risks.
Speaking exclusively to Northeast Live, NFR Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) Kapinjal Kishore Sharma stated that the railway has initiated a comprehensive aerial and geophysical survey over an 80-kilometer stretch. This survey employs advanced drone-based LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging), high-resolution aerial imaging, and electromagnetic surveys to detect and identify potential landslide-prone areas and embankment instability. These technologies will enable NFR to proactively address infrastructure vulnerabilities and prevent disruptions.
Additionally, NFR is conducting Terrestrial Laser Scanning at key tunnel locations to ensure safety and structural integrity, particularly during the monsoon season. This 360-degree laser scanning technique provides sub-centimetre precision in detecting deformations, joint dislocations, and water ingress, supporting preventive maintenance and long-term operational planning.
Meanwhile, the Commission of Railway Safety (CRS) is scheduled to conduct an inspection in the Bairabi-Sairang sector in June. Following this inspection, passenger train services are expected to commence soon, connecting Sairang near Aizawl to the national railway network. For now, work on the section has been completed, and goods trains are currently running on trial services.
