New Year Marred by Heavy Gunfire in Manipur

Security forces, including the Border Security Force (BSF), engaged in heavy gunfire to defend the village and push back the attackers.
While people across globe welcomed the New Year with celebrations, residents of Kadangband in Imphal West district faced violent clashes. Armed miscreants from Kangpokpi Hills, launched a sudden attack on Kadangband village on early hours of January 1.
In retaliation, security forces, including the Border Security Force (BSF), engaged in heavy gunfire to defend the village and push back the attackers. The exchange of fire created panic among the locals, who have already been on edge due to recent violence in the region.
The situation in Manipur has been recently tense since Christmas Eve, with militants repeatedly targeting valley areas. One such attack left a security personnel, a video journalist, and several village volunteers injured. Chief Minister N. Biren Singh strongly condemned these incidents, describing them as acts of cowardice aimed at disrupting peace in the state.
This latest attack is part of a pattern of violence that has plagued border areas between Imphal East and Kangpokpi, including Sinam Kom, Thamnapokpi, Yaingangpokpi, and Sabungkhok Khunou.
Central security forces have been deployed to sensitive locations, including the Uyok Hills, to prevent further attacks. Despite their efforts, the ongoing violence continues to disrupt the lives of residents in these areas.
Authorities are urging citizens to remain vigilant and have assured that steps are being taken to restore peace and security in the region. The government has also appealed for calm and cooperation from the public during this challenging time.
