The state government is planning to convert the old Assembly building into a museum
The new building of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly at Mawdiangdiang will be inaugurated in September 2024, informed chief minister Conrad Sangma on Tuesday.
Interacting with the media during the inaugural ceremony of the 11th International Tourism Mart in Shillong, chief minister Sangma said that the state government is planning to convert the old Assembly Building which is 125 years old, into a heritage museum.
“You are aware that the Assembly building got burnt almost about 20 years back. And therefore not much is left of it. But we have not touched it, and left it as it is because we had to do some of the assembly work there, but as soon as we shift to the new assembly site whose construction is going on if you have seen its gone a long way, by September 2024, we expect to inaugurate it”, CM Sangma said adding,
“we have a plan to have a small museum or some kind of a site there (old Assembly building)”.
This would be part of the state government’s plans for heritage tourism, the CM said.
