The North East Students Organisation (NESO) has called for a 11-hour region-wide shutdown on December 10 opposing Centre’s move to introduce and pass the Citizenship Amendment Bill.

This was decided in a crucial meeting of the influential students body in Guwahati. Briefing newspersons, NESO advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya said that Nagaland has been exempted from the shutdown owing to the Hornbill festival.

However, members of the Naga Students Federation will be holding protests in fron of the Raj Bhawan. NESO has also demanded that the Inner Line Permit System be implemented in the whole Northeast.

While the AASU has already announced a vigorous agitation today’s NESO meet assumes significance.

It may be mentioned that opposition to the Centre’s CAB push has intensified after stakeholders from the Northeast met Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Groups particularly students organisations including the All Assam Students Union, Khasi Students Union are up in arms after the Centre gave its nod to the contentious Bill to be tabled in Parliament.
