The Assam Government has nominated eminent journalist from the state and Editor-in-Chief of Northeast Live, Wasbir Hussain, and Tezpur University Professor of Sociology, Chandan Sarma, to the governing body of Omeo Kumar Das Institute of Social Change and Development, Guwahati.
Hussain, who is also a political commentator specialising in peace, security and development in northeast, has authored and edited close to two dozen books besides writing research papers in several national and international journals and popular media outlets.
Some of Hussain’s publications include, ‘Homemakers Without The Men: Assam’s Widows of Violence,’ ‘Child Victims of Ethnic Violence’, ‘Order in Chaos: Essays on Conflict in India’s Northeast’ and the ‘Road to Peace in South Asia and Peace Tools & Conflict Nuances in India’s Northeast’.
Prof Sarma has worked on developmental projects such as Status of Child Marriage in Assam, Assessment of Nutrition Counselling cum Management Centres in Assam and Contemporary Inter-State Rural Outmigration from Assam to name a few.
He has written chapters such as Contextualizing Social Development in Northeast India, in the book titled Social Sector Development in North-East India, a chapter titled Periphery Calling: Layers of Divergence in the book Fixed Borders, Fluid Boundaries: Identity, Resources and Mobility in North East India and Tribal Movements in Social Movements: Concepts, Experiences and Concerns, and contributed to a lot of journals.
The Omeo Kumar Das Institute of Social Change and Development is an autonomous Institute situated in Guwahati that undertakes, promotes and coordinates research on problems and processes of social transformation and development of Assam and other States of the North Eastern region.
The Institute was established in 1989 under the joint initiative of government of Assam and Indian Council of Social Science Research, New Delhi.
