NEC Plenary meet in Shillong: Issues raised by Northeast CMs

Union Home Minister Amit Shah who chaired the 71st Plenary Meeting of the North Eastern Council (NEC) also was apprised about several key issues pertaining to the 8 respective NE states. Enhancing connecitivity, upliftment of health sector, education, Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)s were some of the aspects that were raised by Chief Ministers seeking Centre’s intervention into it.
Soon after the Plenary Meet concluded in Shillong, the Chief Ministers took to social media to share details as to what issues they raised with the Home Minister during the meeting.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha said that he had requested the Home Minister for the Centre’s intervention on the following issues-

• Increase in allocation of NEC funds
• Upgrading TMC into AIIMS like institute
• Setting up Medical College in TTAADC area
• Increase in Natural Gas allocation for industrial purpose
• Early operationalisation of Agartala-Cox Baazar International flight
• Easing ceiling on borrowing under Externally Aided Projects
• Easing barriers for trade with Bangladesh etc.

Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma posted on X, about his government’s efforts to actively engage with the North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC) and thus facilitating projects in diverse sectors.
In a post on X, Conrad Sangma said, “Pleased to attend the 11th Meeting of the NESAC Society chaired by Hon’ble Union Home Minister, Sh. AmitShah ji and graced by Hon’ble Union Minister for DoNER, Sh. G. Kishan Reddy ji in Shillong. Meghalaya has been actively engaged with NESAC in various projects like mapping of water resources & reservoirs, catchment areas & forest cover, disaster management, urban planning, agriculture, etc. The Government of Meghalaya is thankful to the support from NESAC in all its endeavours and will continue to collaborate in similar areas of interest for the development of the state.”

Arunachal CM Pema Khandu also took to X and termed that the NEC Plenary Meeting would go a long way in ensuring holistic growth and development of the society.
CM Khandu’s post read, “Attending the 71st plenary of North Eastern Council convened at Shillong under the distinguished chairmanship of Hon’ble Union Home Minister Shri @AmitShah Ji. It will prove a watershed moment in further accelerating the region’s all-round development. The Plenary aims to address the unique challenges faced by the region and devise strategic initiatives to promote socio-economic growth, infrastructure development, and cultural preservation.
Hon’ble Home Minister’s leadership and guidance have added gravitas to the proceedings, emphasizing the Centre’s commitment to fostering a holistic and inclusive approach towards the North-East’s development.

Nagaland CM Neiphiu Rio in his speech during the meeting said that his government is making all out efforts to revive the education sector in simulation with the medical sector. Taking to Twitter, CM Rio said, ” We are also pursuing setting up an Indian Institute of Science Education & Research (IISER) in Nagaland. We have requested the Centre to consider converting the Medical College at Kohima into a Central Institute like AIIMS or a Regional Institute like RIMS.”

Sikkim CM Prem Singh Tamang raised the following important issues and tried to draw the attention of Union Home Minister Amit Shah on these.

1. Oct 2023 Teesta Stage III Disaster and Reconstruction, Rehabilitation aftermath
2. Speeding up Sevoke – Sikkim Rail connectivity project.
3. Three pending agendas LT Seats Reservation , ST to 12 Left out communities and bringing 17th Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje to State.
4. Better Digital Connectivity for Sikkim
5. National Highway Project for better transportation and speeding up existing work.
6. Consideration of implementation of RAP , PAP for tourists visiting Sikkim.
7. Uninterrupted all weather air connectivity at Pakyong Airport.

   Both, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma and Mizoram CM Lalduhoma have not specified anything about the issues that they raised during the NEC plenary meeting.

On the other hand, Manipur CM N Biren Singh skipped the NEC plenary meet owing to the situation in Moreh.
