Nagaland village guards to protest State Govt’s failure to comply with court order regarding hike in salaries

The Village Guards Association Nagaland (VGAN) on Monday said that they would hold a two-day agitation on July 27 and 28, from 6 am to 5 pm, in their respective districts to protest the state government’s failure to comply with the court order to enhance the wages of village guards.

Addressing a press conference in Dimapur, VGAN president Kurithi Jorror said they would continue the agitation until their demands were met and the court order was implemented.

Jorror expressed concern over the reduction of village guards’ strength, saying that it would be a challenging task for the village guards.

He also stated that such a decision could potentially create significant problems.

Therefore, the association president has urged the government to refrain from making any actions that would worsen the current issues.

He further claimed that during VGAN golden jubilee in 2007, chief minister Neiphiu Rio had made an announcement of Rs 100 per month insurance policy was to be paid on maturity every five years.

Even after 187 months (15 years), the amount totalling up to Rs.17.92 crore approximately has not been released, he added.

Jorror further added that they have been pleading with the government to release the insurance amount, but there has been no reaction from the state government, adding that the sum would be larger with interest.

The government would positively give recommendations when the expert committee file affidavit on August 4, president informed.

He said that the village guards would announce next course of action based on the outcome.

The VGAN general secretary Thsatongpi Sangtam also urged the state government to send positive recommendations to Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) regarding enhancement of wages.

Village guards, according to Sangtam, serve as guides for the security forces, provide protection near international borders, accord guard of honour during VVIPs visits, ROP duty.
