The Nagaland People’s Front (NPF) has suspended Rajya Sabha member KG Kenye from primary as well as an active member of the party. The Rajya Sabha member was suspended on Wednesday for voting in favour of the Citizenship Amendment Act.

The party has considered KG Kenye’s support to the Act as an ‘anti-party activity’ as the NPF has been opposing the Centre’s decision of implementation of the act in the Northeast.

On 7th January, the NPF Central Executive Council and Central Office Bearers referred the matter to Disciplinary Action Committee for further action. The NPF also invited Kenye to explain his position as to why he had voted in favour of the bill, which is now an Act, in the Rajya Sabha.

Although he clarified that he voted in favour of the bill as it granted exemption to Nangland under provisions of the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation 1873, the Disciplinary Action Committee of NPF, yesterday, after going through the recommendations of the party’s Central Executive Council suspended him from the party.

It may be mentioned, on 21st December KG Kenye tendered his resignation from the post of Secretary General of the Naga Peoples’ Front but not from the party after he was issued a show-cause notice by the Disciplinary Action Committee for voting in favour of the Act in the parliament.
