Oting village in Nagaland’s Mon district has shunned Christmas festivities in memory of the Mon victims. The family members and friends of the victims of the Mon firing incident gathered at the graveyard to observe Christmas and once again pray for the departed souls.
Candles were lit in memory of the 14 victims and youths and family members sang in memory of the deceased.
Earlier the Konyak Union had asked its members within Mon district to refrain from any recreational activities or merrymaking until justice was delivered to those killed on Mon.
It is to be mentioned that, earlier on December 4, fourteen villagers in Nagaland’s Mon district were reportedly killed, and at least two persons were missing when security forces opened fire on a pickup truck on Saturday evening, leading to angry reactions by locals.
Reportedly, the villagers were workers at a coal mine in the area. According to the community leaders in the area, the incident happened when they were returning from work. The security forces opened fire on suspicion that they were militants. The community leaders claimed that most of those killed were workers at a rat-hole coal mine in the area.
State Chief Minister Niephiu Rio and other top leaders of the state attended the funeral of the firing victims on December 6.
