Nagaland Health Minister S Pangnyu Phom inaugurated the Biosafety Laboratory-2 (BSL-2) in the state’s Tuensang District on Friday, August 28. The laboratory was inaugurated in the presence of Advisor Toshi Wungtong, Advisor Haiying, health officials and other dignitaries.
The Health Minister in his inaugural speech, said that setting up of the BSL-2 in Tuensang district was not an easy task and the new laboratory at Tuensang will not only cater to the district alone but also to other neighboring districts like Longleng, Kiphire and Noklak.
He said that one of the strategies to combat the virus was to increase the testing capacity in the state and although the rapid spread of COVID-19 has put all normal life on halt, the mortality rate is low as compared to other diseases, while the country is relatively doing better in containing the virus.
Phom added that the laboratory is not only meant for the diagnosis of COVID-19 but it can also be used for diagnosing other diseases such as TB, HIV and Hepatitis B & C, as this region has several cases of these diseases. He further called on the people to utilise the possible services to the maximum.
It is to be mentioned that this is the third BSL laboratory which has been set up in the State of Nagaland.
