Following the killing of 15 civilians by security forces in Mon district over the weekend, an emergency sitting of the Nagaland Cabinet at Kohima today, decided to formally take up the issue of repealing the Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA) with the centre.

The meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, decided to write to the Centre calling for the removal of AFSPA in the wake of the tragic killings by security forces in Tiru, Mon district.
Briefing the media, Neiba Kronu, Minister of Planning and Parliamentary Affairs and Nagaland government spokesperson, and Temjen Imna Along, Minister of Higher and Technical Education, also informed that the high-level SIT constituted to probe the incident has been asked to submit its report within a month.

The ministers informed that 6 of the injured were shifted to Dimapur for better treatment, even as two more injured are admitted in AMCH, Dibrugarh. In the wake of the tragic incident, all cultural activities have been suspended in the hornbill festival. However, stalls will remain open and the festival will end with a simple closing ceremony, the ministers informed.
