Following an operation to rescue two people who had been abducted and held hostage in the area, two miscreants were shot during an encounter with police in the state’s West Garo Hills district.

The police team tracked down the armed miscreants near the Dibru Hills forest reserve during the operation, which began last night and ended this morning.

Following an exchange of fire between the police and the miscreants, the area was cordoned off and the bodies of two abductors were recovered. The police also rescued the two victims. A single AK Rilfe and a pistol were recovered from the scene.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma lauds the police for their commendable operation.

“Some criminals from outside the state tried to jeopardise peace in Meghalaya. They kept two kidnapped persons in Dibru Hill RF, PS Tikrikila.

When @wghpolice hunt for them in the wee hours of the morning, they opened fire & tried to melt in the darkness but vigilant police killed 2 kidnappers in retaliatory firing & recovered 1 AK 47, 1 9 mm pistol, 32 live rds & 33 empty rds. The 2 persons have now been rescued! Well done
