The Mizoram State Commission for Women Chairperson C. Lalchhandami on Sunday tendered her resignation to the Commissioner and Secretary of Mizoram Social Welfare, Tribal Affairs, Women and Child Development after she was accused of holding the position despite being overage.
Earlier on September 6, the Mizo National Front (MNF) lodged a complaint with the state police against the appointment of C Lalchhandami as the chairperson of the Mizoram State Commission for Women (MSCW), alleging it was done against the law.
The MNF claims Lalchhandami has exceeded the age limit of 65 years, as prescribed in the Mizoram State Commission for Women Act 2004, and demands her resignation by September 9.
C. Lalchhandami in her resignation letter stated that during her tenure as Chairperson from March 8, 2024, she had a case hearing of 102 numbers, with a success story of 80%.
She also mentioned that her tenure as Chairperson witnessed more cases than the previous five years, i.e May 2019 to February 2024, which she stated had 86 cases.
She also criticized the opposition party for attacking her on her age, claiming that she is still eligible for the post (which is a maximum of 65 years).
She further added that after consultation with the ZPM political party leaders, it is for better functioning and dignity of the Commission that she has decided to resign from her position.
