Mizoram State Election Commission Unveils Final Electoral Rolls for Village Council Elections

The State Election Commission of Mizoram has released the final electoral rolls for the upcoming elections to 544 village councils (VCs) and 111 local councils (LCs) across the state. Scheduled to be held before 19 February 2025, the elections will see a total of 4,37,708 registered voters for VCs, with women outnumbering men by 6,488. The rolls include 2,22,098 female voters and 2,15,610 male voters.
Mamit district, bordering Bangladesh and Tripura, leads with the highest number of VC voters at 63,610, followed by Kolasib with 63,345 and Aizawl with 61,947. Hnahthial district, Mizoram’s newest district, has the smallest electorate with just 23,160 voters.

For the LCs under the Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) and Lunglei Municipal Council (LMC), the voter base stands at 2,85,932. AMC’s 87 councils account for 2,44,726 electors, while LMC’s 24 councils have 41,206 voters.
Mizoram continues to emphasise gender representation with a 33% reservation for women in both VCs and LCs.
This announcement follows controversy over a November 2024 decision by the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM)-which led the government to shorten the terms of existing councils by six months, setting their expiry for 19 February 2025. This move sparked criticism from opposition parties and sitting council members.
The All Mizoram Village Councils Association (AMVCA) filed a petition with the Gauhati High Court challenging the decision but later withdrew it after a subsequent government order on 21 November. AMVCA President K. Lalngaizuala has stated that the association remains opposed to the government’s actions and expects a new hearing when the High Court reopens on 13 January 2025.
Despite legal challenges, the finalization of the electoral rolls marks a significant step in ensuring the smooth conduct of these elections, critical to local governance in Mizoram.
