Mizoram – the only state in the country to have not reported a single Covid death since the pandemic hit several months back, registered its first fatality on Wednesday, as a 66-year-old man with co-morbidities succumbed to the infection.
The state’s first death comes amid a seven-day total lockdown in the capital city of Aizawl, which began on Tuesday, to check the spread of infection.
The State’s Directorate of Information and Public Relations informed via Twitter, “The first Covid-19 related mortality in Mizoram comes as a huge shock to the entire state. He was 62-years-old with existing co-morbidities and was under treatment at ZMC for more than 10 days.”
It later tweeted to correct the age of the patient, “The age of the deceased COVID-19 patient was erroneously reported as 62 years. It is, however, clarified that his age is 66 years. The mistake is regretted.”
The victim has been identified as Lalsangkhuma of Dawrpui locality. Lalsangkhuma suffered from Covid and had a co-morbid heart condition. He was admitted at the ICU ward of ZMC on October 18.
Mizoram reported its first COVID-19 case on March 24 as a 52-year-old pastor, with travel history to the Netherlands, tested positive for the virus.
As per latest update, Mizoram reported a total of 2,607 COVID-19 cases among which 374 are active cases, however, 2,233 patients have recovered so far.
