Mizoram Polls 2023: MNF announces candidates list; 2 women and 15 new faces in list

MNF will contest all 40 Assembly seats. CM Zoramthanga will contest from Aizawl East – I, Home Minister Lalchamliana, Assembly Speaker Lalrinliana Sailo will not contest the polls

Ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) on Wednesday announced the names of candidates who would be contesting the 40 Assembly seats that would go to polls later this year. The list includes 2 women and 15 new faces.

Chief Minister and MNF President, Zoramthanga, will contest from Aizawl East – I, the seat he won in the 2018 assembly polls, while Deputy Chief Minister Tawnluia will also try to retain his Tuichang assembly seat.

The MNF will contest all the 40. Home Minister Lalchamliana and Assembly Speaker Lalrinliana Sailo, will not contest the polls. Power Minister R. Lalzirliana and Tourism Minister Robert Romawia Royte have changed their constituencies.

The names of the candidates were announced at a function in Aizawl attended by thousands of party workers from Aizawl district and nearby districts. CM Zoramthanga also kicked off the campaign for the coming polls.

Lalchamliana announced his decision not to contest the elections saying that he wanted to make room for younger generation while Sailo was dropped by the party. Former Minister of State Dr. K. Beichhua was expelled from the party for ‘anti-party activities and he is most likely to contest from his Siaha seat as BJP candidate.

While Lalzirliana, elected in 2018 elections from Tawi assembly constituency will now try his luck from Aizawl North – I seat, being held by former Deputy Speaker Vanlalhlana of Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) and Royte, elected last time from Aizawl East – II will contest from Hachhek assembly seat being held at present by Congress.

Except for the two ministers, all the other sitting legislators will contest from the same seats they won in 2018.

MNF selected two women candidates. B. Lalawmpuii, now an executive corporator in Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) will replace Royte in Aizawl East-II seat, while Prova Chakma will contest for the first time will contest from West Tupui assembly seat in south Mizoram’s Lunglei district.

Except for 25 sitting legislators, 15 MNF nominees are new faces.
