The Mizoram police said the operation highlighted the transnational character of arms smuggling in the Northeast.

The Mizoram Police has busted a trans-national arms shipment between rebels from Myanmar and Bangladesh in what is described as the biggest arms haul in the northeastern state.

The Mizoram Police, in collaboration with an unidentified intelligence agency, arrested a top leader of the Myanmar based Chin National Front in the state’s Saithah village in Mamit district that led to the recovery of a consignment of AK series rifles, over 10,000 rounds of ammunition and at least 13 magazines.

The weapons were being supplied by the Chin National Front to the United People’s Democratic Front, an insurgent group active in Bangladesh’s Chittagong Hill Tracts. This was part of a trade between the two rebel outfits.

The Mizoram police said the operation highlighted the transnational character of arms smuggling in the Northeast that criss cross porous international borders.

“Five accused have been arrested in connection with this arms seizure. Among those detained is a notable leader of the Chin National Front (CNF), an insurgent group based in Myanmar. The arrest of such a high-profile individual is a significant achievement in counter-insurgency operations in the state of Mizoram,” the Mizoram Police said.

The Mizoram Police said such transnational arms dealings threatens regional stability. The Police added that with this catch, a serious threat to regional peace and stability has been neutralised.”

A case has been filed and the police is taking the matter seriously as Mizoram shares borders with both Myanmar and Bangladesh. An estimated 40000 refugees escaping the war in Myanmar between the military and the resistance forces have taken shelter in Mizoram.
