Mizoram: N. Zangura Takes Over as New LADC Chief Amid Major Political Realignment

BN Thanga, MDC, urged the Lai Students’ Association (LSA) to accept the political shift and support the new government.
Governor General V.K. Singh today appointed N. Zangura as the new Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC). Zangura, who now leads a newly formed Joint Legislature Party, must prove his majority on the Council floor within 10 days. If successful, he will become the fourth CEM to hold office during the current LADC term.
In the 2020 LADC elections, the Mizo National Front (MNF) won 20 out of 25 seats and initially formed the government under Manghmunga Chinzah. However, internal rifts triggered a series of leadership changes, with V. Zirsanga and C. Muanthanga subsequently taking over. Zirsanga has served as CEM twice during this term.
Amid ongoing instability, recent defections and realignments shifted the balance of power. N. Zangura, formerly with the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) and now aligned with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), teamed up with MNF members and others to claim the support of 14 councillors enough to challenge the existing ZPM-led administration.
In response, Governor Singh acted swiftly and appointed Zangura as the new head of the Council. A floor test has been scheduled to verify the claim of majority.
State BJP President Vanlalhmuaka said the change reflects the people’s will and their desire for a more stable and accountable government. He welcomed the new coalition and expressed confidence in Zangura’s leadership.
BN Thanga, Member of District Council (MDC), urged the Lai Students’ Association (LSA) to accept the political shift and support the new government. The LSA had earlier appealed to the Governor to dissolve the Council due to ongoing turmoil. Thanga requested the student body to cooperate with the new administration for the sake of peace and development in the region.
