Mizoram: Mara Council Polls tomorrow

With the elections to the Mara Autonomous District Council polls falling tomorrow, the polls have assumed significance ahead of next year’s assembly elections in the state.

Just ahead of next year’s elections in the 40-member Mizoram Assembly, the MADC elections in Siaha district are crucial for both the ruling and opposition parties. The ruling Mizo National Front or MNF with the BJP and the opposition congress were seen locking horns on their hectic campaigning for the 25-member strong tribal autonomous body. Notably, the MADC, situated at the southern tip of Mizoram, bordering Myanmar, is one of the three tribal autonomous district councils in Mizoram.

The ruling MNF, an ally of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance, has put up candidates in all the 25 seats, while the BJP and the Congress have fielded 24 and 23 candidates, respectively. Meanwhile, the state’s main opposition party, Zoram People’s Movement, or ZPM, is contesting eight seats. In the earlier elections held in May 2017, the Congress secured a total of 17 seats.

Meanwhile, a total of 42,326 people, including 21,960 women, are all set to exercise their franchise tomorrow.
