Mizoram Landslides: Sialsuk Villagers Open Homes to Over 500 Travellers

Even as landslides cut off access and created panic, the people of Sialsuk turned the crisis into a story of solidarity.
Residents of Sialsuk village in Mizoram stepped in in a big way to help more than 500 travellers who got stranded over the weekend after massive landslides blocked key roads in the state’s central region.
Triggered by continuous heavy rainfall, the main landslide occurred at Sentezel Quarry, a stretch between Sialsuk and Thenzawl, cutting off all vehicular movement. Another landslide at Midum Kham worsened the situation by closing access to Aizawl, leaving hundreds of commuters stuck with nowhere to go.
Without waiting for government aid, local organisations in Sialsuk, including the Village Council and the Young Mizo Association (YMA), immediately launched relief efforts. They coordinated food distribution, opened homes, and helped direct stranded travellers to safety.
Sialsuk, with around 600 households, turned into a community shelter overnight. Residents volunteered to direct traffic, find stranded people, and provide warm meals and safe places to sleep.
To support families hosting guests, the Village Council and YMA distributed basic food items like rice, lentils, and potatoes, easing the burden on both households and local shops.
“We couldn’t let people go hungry or sleep out in the open,” said Pu Lalmuanchhana, the Village Council President. “When hotels and guesthouses were full, we worked with villagers to welcome travellers into our own homes.”

Officials have not yet confirmed when the blocked roads will reopen. Meanwhile, Sialsuk’s residents continue to provide support and comfort to those still stranded, showing that in times of trouble, humanity and unity can make all the difference.
