Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram, may soon witness relief from its persistent traffic congestion as the Mizoram Government is considering a ropeway and cable car system connecting Aizawl, Sairang railway station, and Lengpui to enhance tourism and improve public transport connectivity.
The initiative aims to connect the state capital to Lengpui, home to Mizoram’s only airport, while also linking the Sairang railway station, providing a seamless travel option for residents and tourists.
The project was proposed to foster tourism development and strengthen the state’s transport infrastructure. Officials deliberated whether the project should be undertaken by the state tourism department or integrated into the Aizawl Sustainable Urban Transport Project (ASUTP). The ASUTP is an externally aided initiative currently managed by the Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation (UD&PA) department.
Chief Minister Lalduhoma recently held a meeting with Shuji Kimura, Principal Transport Specialist at the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Manila, to assess the progress of the Aizawl Sustainable Urban Transport Project (ASUTP).
The meeting was attended by ADB India officials and representatives from Mizoram’s Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation (UD&PA) department. If executed successfully, the project could significantly improve urban mobility and address Aizawl’s escalating transportation challenges.
The feasibility study for the project was a major highlight of the discussion, and ADB has committed to financing its implementation.
