Mizoram Government to Tighten Rules for Drug De-Addiction Centres

The Mizoram government has announced plans to enforce stricter regulations for drug de-addiction and rehabilitation centres across the state. This move aims to tackle the growing issue of unregulated centres and improve the quality of care for individuals battling substance abuse.

Social Welfare and Tribal Affairs Minister Lalrinpuii, speaking at a press conference today, said that only 11 of the 46 operating de-addiction and rehabilitation centres in the state currently receive support from the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MoSJE). The remaining centres are largely volunteer-run or faith-based facilities, many of which lack the mandatory accreditation required under The Mizoram Drug (Controlled Substances) Act, 2016 and The Mizoram Drug Treatment-cum-Rehabilitation Center Accreditation Rules, 2019.

“Accreditation by the government is mandatory,” the minister stated, stressing the need for stricter oversight. She added that the government plans to amend the 2019 Accreditation Rules to close existing loopholes and strengthen regulatory control. This overhaul is intended to ensure that all centres meet minimum standards and provide professional, standardised care to those seeking recovery.

The Social Welfare Department, designated as the nodal agency for these efforts, is also placing a renewed focus on skill development for recovering addicts, aiming for long-term, sustainable rehabilitation. “We want to ensure not just short-term recovery but lasting, meaningful change,” Lalrinpuii said.

This initiative comes amid rising concerns over the increasing rates of substance abuse and the unchecked growth of unregulated rehab centres in Mizoram. The government’s push for stricter norms is expected to bring greater accountability, improved treatment outcomes, and a more structured approach to addiction recovery across the state.
