CM Lalduhoma emphasized the importance of reclaiming indigenous histories and developing narratives from a Mizo point of view.
Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma released a book titled ‘Mizo History and the Great Chiefs of Sailo: Vandula & Ropuiliani’ authored by four distinguished researchers from Mizoram University.
The book is a comprehensive work that delves into the history of the Sailo chiefs, with a particular focus on two legendary figures, Chief Vandula and his wife, Ropuiliani.
In his address, the Chief Minister underscored the challenges faced in documenting Mizo’s history. He pointed out that the introduction of the Mizo alphabet in the early 1900s significantly reduced the availability of written records. As a result, much of Mizo’s history has been derived from British colonial narratives, which often offer a limited or biased perspective. CM Lalduhoma emphasized the importance of reclaiming indigenous histories and developing narratives from a Mizo point of view.
“We have a vast history to uncover, especially from the pre-colonial era. Developing our own narratives, distinct from British interpretations, is a valuable challenge for researchers and enthusiasts today,” he remarked.
The book offers a deep dive into the lineage and reign of Chief Vandula, exploring his influence on the Mizo community. It also honours Ropuiliani, who, after her husband’s death, became a prominent figure in Mizo’s resistance against British colonial rule. The text highlights her significant contributions, including her leadership in Denlung and surrounding villages. Ropuiliani’s unwavering patriotism and resistance to British rule are central to the book, with a focus on her eventual capture and imprisonment in Chittagong, where she died in 1895.
The release of Mizo history and the great chiefs of Sailo serves as an important step in revitalizing Mizo historical narratives, bringing forth the stories of Vandula and Ropuiliani, whose legacy continues to inspire pride and resilience within the Mizo community.
The authors of the book, using a combination of written records and oral traditions, have provided a well-rounded account of these important figures. Dr. Hmingthanzuali offered a preview of the book during the event, while Dr. Laithangpuii, one of the co-authors, presented a concise report on their research findings.
The event was attended by the grandchildren of Vandula and Ropuiliani, as well as descendants of Lalsavunga, Ropuiliani’s father and former chief of Aizawl. Many Mizo history enthusiasts and students were also present, showcasing the community’s deep interest in preserving and understanding its rich heritage.
