The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Mizoram, has expressed happiness for the successful passage of the historic Women Reservation Bill (Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam) in both the Houses of Parliament making reservation for women in Lok Sabha and State Assemblies a reality.
Speaking to media on Monday, spokesperson of BJP Mizoram, Lalremsangi Fanai expressed the party’s happiness and lauded this development as a new and important chapter for the NDA-BJP leadership.
“We have been demanding for the Bill for a while, and now that it has been passed, we applaud the move wholeheartedly,” she added.
Fanai emphasized the importance and significance of the Bill, pointing out that it had been unanimously approved by all political parties, regardless of whether they were in power or not.
“The fact that the bill was passed unanimously reflects its essential nature. Reservation for women in the State legislative assembly and Parliament for policy and law-making will elevate India to a higher status,” said Fanai.
The Women’s Reservation Bill, which had been under discussion for 27 years, was passed by Lok Sabha on September 20 in the Parliament’s Special Session with 454 members voting in favour of the legislation and two against it, while the Rajya Sabha passed the Bill unanimously on September 22 with 214 members voting in support and none against.
The Bill, aimed at providing greater representation for women in India’s legislative bodies, has been a longstanding aspiration for gender equality advocates and has gained widespread support. It reserves one-third of the seats for women in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies.
