The Mizoram Assembly on Friday passed the bill for creation of Saitual, Hnathial and Khawzawl as districts.
The ruling Mizo National Front had promised creation of 3 new districts in Mizoram before it won the November 2018 Assembly Election.
The announcement was earlier made in 2008 by MNF to create 3 new districts in the state for administrative convenience, but failed to make them operational after it lost to the Congress in the Assembly polls.
Addressing the session, MLA C. Lalmuanpuia alleged that Congress failed to implement and make the three towns into full-fledged district headquarters. The formation of the three new districts was one of the main promises made by the MNF during the election campaigns which ensured a successful victory for them.
Mizoram had 8 districts in the state and now with the formation of Saitual, Hnathial and Khawzawl, the state will now have 11 districts. Saitual is located in Aizawl district, Hnathial in Lunglei district and Khawzawl in Champhai district. The three towns will now be separate districts.
The people of these three areas have been demanding separate district headquarters since the past 40 years.
Addressing the Assembly session, Health Minister and Vice President of MNF Dr R. Lalthangliana expressed hope that that the three new districts would politically and economically benefit the people.
