Over 3000 Myanmarese nationals crossed over to the hill state of Mizoram after fresh artillery shelling at Khawmawi village of Chin state in Myanmar yesterday.
At least one civilian was killed and 3 others injured in the latest artillery shelling.
The 3000-odd Myanmarese nationals crossed over to Zokhawthar village and its surrounding areas, in the Champhai district.
Earlier in the morning yesterday, the sounds of gunfire and the pounding of artillery shells could be heard from Zokhawthar and nearby villages.
Khawmawi village is within walking distance from Zokhawthar village, the lone border trade center with Myanmar and situated along the Mizoram-Myanmar border river Tiau.
Thankunga Pachuau, president of the Young Mizo Association, said that the Chinland Defense Force or the CDF, the civil resistance force (militia) of Chin state attacked the Myanmar army camp situated on the top of Khawmawi village in the early morning and the exchange of fire lasted for over 3 hours.
Myanmar army personnel, who have a camp at Rihkhawdar village, came to the rescue of the soldiers in Khawmawi village by pounding several shells of artillery toward Khawmawi village, Pachuau said.
