The Assam Government is working on several fronts to find a permanent solution to this civic issue

Mission Flood Free Guwahati is what the Himanta Biswa Sarma government is trying to accomplish despite the city of 1 million people bearing the brunt of a poor network of clogged and unscientifically constructed drains.

As part of the efforts to resolve this perennial issue the Assam Chief Minister chaired a key meeting to assess the ongoing works and took note of the progress.
After the meeting, the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) informed that the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has undertaken at least 5 major works for the purpose of Flood Free Guwahati.

These include:
Construction of kutcha drains and cleaning of Oil India Limited (OIL) pipelines from Super Market point to Silsako Beel (Lake)

Construction of drainage channel from Narengi Railway Station to Bondajan confluence

Construction of Pump House at Silsako Beel and enhancing discharge capacity of Bahini river diversion from PIBCO point to Silsako Beel

Construction of Pump House with Sump at Bondajan

Construction of Storm Water Diversion Drain from Basistha Chariali to Basistha River

On the other hand, several steps have been taken to mitigate the problem of artificial flood. These include de-siltation of natural channels, major and minor drains, eviction of blockages and encroachments, enhancement of water carrying capacity of natural channels, repair and reconstruction of guard walls.

It was also informed that the first round of de-siltation or major rivers and beels (lakes) has already been completed. The government is also working on installation of water pumps in critical areas, building and diversion of rivers. Among the ongoing works to address the issue, the government has also started demolishing bridges obstructing flow of water.

Assam Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Ashok Singhal who was also present in the meeting took to Twitter and said,”Under the leadership of Hon’ble CM Dr. @himantabiswa dangoriya, we are working round the clock to prevent floods in Guwahati.

Reiterating our commitment to ensure a flood-free Guwahati, we have taken various measures such as desilting of drains, action against encroachments, strengthening the guard walls etc.”
