Manipur’s stellar weight lifter, Saikhom Mirabai Chanu became the only Indian weightlifter to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics on Monday (this is pending official ratification expected on April 11), making a remarkable comeback after a six-month injury-forced hiatus.
The 29-year-old Olympic silver medallist finished third in Group B of the women’s 49kg (and 11th overall) at the IWF World Cup in Phuket, Thailand which was a mandatory qualifying event to book her berth at the Paris Olympics.
Mirabai Chanu last competed in the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou and after that in IWF World Cup this year. Prior to that Chanu won gold medal in 49 kg category at Commonwealth Games 2022 held at Birmingham, England.She lifted a total of 201 kg in snatch and cleaned and jerk.
Taking to X, she wrote, “Good to be back after injury. I’m leaving this competition feeling strong & confident. The rehabilitation was tough and demanding, but with the support of everyone, I pushed through all the complications. I couldn’t be happier being back on the ramp – lifting for my country.”
