Prime Minister Narendra Modi will virtually inaugurate the Assam Petro-Chemicals Limited (APL)‘s newly installed methanol plant with a production capacity of 500 Tones Per Day (TPD) at Namrup in Dibrugarh district of Assam on April 14, 2023.

The trials for the production of raw methanol have been conducted.

On October 3, 2017, APL started an expansion programme for the installation of a 200 TPD Formalin Plant at Boitamari, Bongaigaon district, and a 500 TPD Methanol Plant at Namrup, Dibrugarh district, at a total cost of Rs 1,709 crore.
The project- the methanol Plant at Namrup had a 36-month implementation time initially. It was supposed to be completed in September 2019 but has missed several deadlines till now.
500 TPD Methanol plant at Namrup has been successfully installed using lean natural gas (99% in Methane) supplied by Oil India Limited from the gas fields in Assam and transported by Assam Gas Company Ltd. (AGCL), another government of Assam Public Sector Undertaking.

Notably, Assam Petrochemicals Limited (APL) established in 1971 is the first company in India to produce methanol from natural gas.
51 per cent of shares of the company (APL) are held by the Assam Government while 49 per cent of shares are held by Oil India Limited.
At present a 100 Ton Per Day (TPD) Methanol and 125 TPD Formalin plant located at Namrup, Assam are fully functional under APL.
APL is also a key competitor in the Indian petroleum sector, known for its better products and unwavering dedication to sustainable development.
In November 2023, construction on the 200 TPD formalin project is expected to start. The methanol generated by the 500 TPD methanol plant that is already under construction will serve as the project’s feedstock.
