With Rajya Sabha giving the green signal to the abrogation of Article 370 and the bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, former chief ministers Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah were arrested by security forces on Monday.
Former J&K chief minister and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti has been detained and taken to a guest house in Srinagar, following the imposition of Section 144 in the region. The PDP chief was already under house arrest in the run up to the Centre’s decision to strip special status to Jammu and Kashmir.
National Conference leader Omar Abdullah was also taken into custody, moments after Rajya Sabha passed the bill to bifurcate the state into two Union territories. Jammu and Kashmir People’s Conference leaders Sajjad Lone and Imran Ansari have also been arrested.
Earlier in the day, Mehbooba Mufti had come down heavily on the Modi government for scrapping J&K’s special status. The government had revoked the state’s special status, provided under Article 370.
The Centre’s decision to scrap article 370 evoked sharp reactions from former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti who termed the move of the Centre to scrap Article 370 as illegal and unconstitutional.
In a series of tweets, Mufti said that this decision of the Centre will have catastrophic consequences.
Meanwhile, two parliamentarians belonging to the Mehbooba Mufti-led PDP were asked to leave the Rajya Sabha on Monday after they attempted to tear the constitution in an apparent public display of anger over government’s move of scrapping Article 370 and Article 35A.
