Meghalaya is witnessing a quiet revolution in sports as the state government rolls out its Elite Pathway Programme to nurture young talent into future champions. Australian Olympian and former triple jumper Ian Campbell leads this ambitious effort, personally scouting and training promising athletes from every district of the state.
Over the past three years, Campbell has tested more than 30,000 children across Meghalaya, carefully selecting only 11 exceptional athletes for the Super Elite Pathway (SEP) programme, the highest level of the initiative. This programme uses rigorous data analysis and high-performance training to develop raw talent, offering advanced coaching to those who show extraordinary promise.
With Meghalaya set to host the 2027 National Games, the timing of this initiative is crucial. Campbell said, “The athletes selected are still in their teens and will compete against experienced Olympians and Commonwealth Games veterans. Our immediate focus is on helping them achieve personal bests, while podium finishes will come with time and experience.”
The Elite Pathway Programme stands out for its inclusivity, reaching deep into remote and rural areas. The team gathers data firsthand to ensure that no talented child, no matter how isolated, misses this opportunity. This careful groundwork is vital for building a strong sports culture throughout the state.
Early successes are encouraging. Several athletes in athletics and weightlifting have already achieved national rankings in junior categories. The programme now focuses on bridging the difficult gap from junior to senior competition by providing sustained mentoring and exposure.
Meghalaya’s sports infrastructure is also improving steadily. While existing facilities meet current needs, the soon-to-be-completed Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium promises a state-of-the-art venue for training Meghalaya’s emerging sports stars.
This initiative aligns with a broader vision: to prepare athletes not only for regional competitions but also for international events such as the Asian and Commonwealth Games. Though the Olympic dream is challenging, Meghalaya is building a sports pipeline with careful planning, patience, and expert guidance.
A key advantage is Meghalaya’s youthful population, with nearly 49 percent under the age of 20, almost double the national average. The state is harnessing this demographic dividend by combining local commitment with international expertise to rewrite the sports story of Northeast India, one athlete at a time.
