Meghalaya: Voting for Sohiong seat tomorrow, 6 candidates in fray

Voting for the Sohiong Assembly seat of Meghalaya would take place tomorrow, May 10. Election for this constituency was cancelled because of the death of HDR Lyngdoh, the UDP candidate for the seat on February 20 ahead of the Meghalaya Assembly elections held in February 27.

Six candidates are in the fray — Samlin Malngiang of the National People’s Party (NPP), Synshar Lyngdoh Thabah of the United Democratic Party (UDP), Osborne Kharjana of Congress, Eric Kharbuki of BJP, Stoding Thabah of Trinamool Congress and SandondorRyntathiang of Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP).

There are 34,000 plus electorate in the Sohiong constituency with over 16,000 male. Polling will take place in 3,328 polling booths in 63 polling stations. Voting will begin at 7AM, Chief electoral officer (CEO) of Meghalaya Frederick Roy Kharkongor said.

Earlier this week, Meghalaya election department deployed all-women flying squads to check and prevent home-brewed liquor production in the constituency to ensure that the country brew is not used by the parties to woo voters. May 8, 9 and 10 have been declared as ‘dry days’ in the district which means liquor cannot be sold.

The election department also declared May 13, the day of counting of votes as ‘dry day’.

The 23-Sohiong assembly seat is one of the 55 out of the 60 seats reserved for the Scheduled Tribe in the Meghalaya legislative assembly.

Polling was held for 59 Assembly constituencies on February 27, following which NPP emerged victorious with 26 seats and formed the government for the second consecutive term.
