Meghalaya: South Garo Hills MLAs To Seek Railway Line Extension To Dhaka

He further said that the proposal aims to boost trade and economic growth in the region by reviving a vital transport corridor.

Meghalaya Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma and other MLAs from South Garo Hills have decided to request the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma to take up with the Centre for extension of the railway line from Guwahati to Mendipathar, further linking Baghmara and Dhaka.

The legislators are likely to meet Chief Minister during the ongoing budget session of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly and submit a memorandum in this regard.

Speaking to media, Sangma said, “I along with four MLAs from the district will be meeting chief minister to submit a memorandum for extending the railway line from Guwahati to Mendipathar to Baghmara and even to Dhaka.”

“This will be the corridor for trade in the long run as in the pre-Independence time specially South Garo Hills, we had a good trade and business,” he added.

He further said that the proposal aims to boost trade and economic growth in the region by reviving a vital transport corridor.

South Garo Hills, once a thriving trade hub before Independence, is seen as a strategic location for expanding rail connectivity. Improved infrastructure is expected to open new avenues for commerce, reinforcing the region’s economic potential.
