Meghalaya sets up its own Judicial Commission following closure of Mukroh Violence Case

In a move to address the unresolved issue surrounding the Mukroh violence that occurred on November 22, 2022, the Meghalaya government has taken a decisive step by establishing its own judicial commission.

“We have put up our own judiciary commission, so we are waiting for our judiciary commission to work. Hoping for the issue to get resolved soon,” stated Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, highlighting the state’s determination to seek justice in the matter.

This decision comes on the heels of the closure of the case by the one-person commission headed by Justice Rumi Kumari Phukan (retd), appointed by the Assam Government to probe the incident.

The closure of the case by the Assam-appointed commission has led to dissatisfaction among the affected parties and prompted the Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma, to assert the need for a dedicated inquiry. Chief Minister Sangma expressed the Meghalaya government’s commitment to finding a just resolution and ensuring accountability for the loss of lives.

The Mukroh incident unfolded when the Assam Police and Assam Forest Guards engaged in a chase with a truck carrying timber. The truck was subsequently detained in the Mukroh village, triggering tension between the law enforcement personnel and the villagers. This confrontation escalated to a tragic firing incident that claimed the lives of four villagers from Meghalaya and one Assam forest guard.
