Meghalaya Prof. David R. Syiemlieh conferred Padma Shri for contributions to Literature and Education

The Vice President of India, Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, various Union Ministers, and other dignitaries were present at the ceremony.

Prof. David R. Syiemlieh from Meghalaya has been conferred with the Padma Shri award by President Droupadi Murmu at a glittering ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi, on Monday for his outstanding contributions to Literature and Education.

A scholar of history and culture of the North East and former Chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), Syiemlieh was among the 4 Padma Vibhushan, 10 Padma Bhushan, and 57 Padma Shri awardees for the year 2025.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma congratulated former Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Chairman and renowned historian, Prof. David Reid Syiemlieh on being awarded with Padma Shri, one of the highest civilian awards of the country.

“He (Prof. Syiemlieh) is celebrated for his discovery of the date of martyrdom of Meghalaya’s freedom fighter U Tirot Sing, and for his profound research on the impact of colonial rule in Northeast India. His work continues to illuminate the rich history of Meghalaya and the region. A well-deserved honour for a lifetime of dedication to knowledge and heritage!” Chief Minister Sangma wrote on X.
