Assam and Meghalaya police are coordinating to deal with the possible repercussions of the publication of the NRC final draft.
Informing this in Shillong today, Raghvendra Awasthi, who is temporarily holding the post of DGP Meghalaya, said the State Police is on high alert especially in the areas bordering Assam amid fear in the state that illegal migrants may try to sneak into Meghalaya following the publication of the final draft NRC in Assam.
Awasthi also informed that the police are keeping a close watch on Garo hills region as one of the constituencies in the area, South Tura, is going to polls this month.
It may be mentioned that the KSU had earlier set up infiltration check gates in the entry and exit points to detect illegal immigrants trying to enter the state after the Assam final draft NRC list was declared.
The step had also evoked reactions from the public and few politicians who even termed it as harassment
