Meghalaya Police Register 2 Extortion Cases In Shillong

The East Khasi Hills Police has registered two extortion cases involving operatives of a banned rebel outfit who are targeting businessmen in Meghalaya’s Shillong.

According to police sources, a suo-moto case was filed at Sadar Police Station on September 17 after a WhatsApp message demanding money was sent to a businessman.
In another similar incident, a resident of Shillong’s Laban area lodged an FIR reporting an extortion demand received via WhatsApp.

Police have launched an investigation and, in response to the rising cases of extortion, have intensified surveillance in Shillong.Checking of vehicles is being conducted at various Nakas to boost public confidence and also as a preventive measure.

Authorities are committed to taking all necessary steps to avert any potential incidents amidst the increasing extortion threats directed at the city’s business community, police sources said.


On Tuesday night, at least four people, including two members of the banned rebel outfit, were arrested by Meghalaya police, for allegedly extorting Rs 10 lakh and criminally intimidating the victim’s daughter.
The arrest was made based on a complaint lodged on August 24, at Madanrting Police Station to the effect that on August 8, an unknown male individual had contacted the complainant demanding Rs 10 lakh.
