In what comes as Meghalaya’s prompt response in combatting militancy, the state police successfully busted the newly formed Garo Militant outfit A’chik National Socialist Council or ANSC. During the counter insurgency operation, as many as 11 cadres of the ANSC were apprehended from Hawakhana. Self-styled chairman of the outfit identified as Chekam Sangma was also nabbed by the police, and several important documents including hand-written notes and pocket diary, among others were recovered from his possession. Not just this, the police have also seized 2 SBML guns and one 9 MM pistol from their possession.
During police interrogation, Sangma admitted that he formed the new outfit with at least 30 other cadres and they were in the process of drafting the constitution. The cadres were also collecting weapons and were about to begin unlawful activities such as kidnapping and extortion. Additionally, the recruitment and training of cadres was scheduled to start after the procurement of weapons. The cadres have also admitted their involvement in illegal weapon smuggling and multiple cases of vehicle theft in Garo Hills.
The cadres were reportedly planning to form a fake NGO to extort money. The police also suspects involvement of 15-20 more unknown cadres and efforts are on to trace them.
