The state of Meghalaya has stepped up measures to deal with the second wave of COVID-19. With number of restrictions in place, the state government is mulling more containment strategies to tackle the spread of the virus.
As night curfew continues to be on place and a partial lockdown imposed, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Tuesday admitted that the situation in the state is serious. He revealed that close to 65 percent of returnees to the state have tested positive which is alarming.
“Reviewed the #COVID19 situation. Discussed the improvement of management up to the grassroot level. We advise returnees to keep themselves isolated for 7 days even if they test negative. Urge citizens to not be complacent, follow Covid Appropriate Behaviour & get vaccinated,” Conrad Sangma tweeted.
While the state government is focusing on vaccination as a means to contain the spread of the virus, it has also taken numerous steps to avoid overcrowding in public places – closing of shops, selling non-essential items and total closures on Sundays area among the moves.
Meanwhile, Senior Congress Leader and West Shillong Legislator Mohendro Rapsang said that the decision of the government to impose the partial lockdown was good, however, he opposed to a complete lockdown as the citizens, mainly the villagers are dependent on the markets.
Rapsang also advocated that people should take the vaccine and inoculation is the only way ahead.
It may be mentioned that the state government had announced fresh restrictions in view of the increasing cases in the Shillong Conglomeration along with a partial lockdown from 26 April to May 2.
