Meghalaya Imposes Night Curfew Along Indo-Bangladesh Border Amid Security Concerns

The night curfew will be in place daily from 8 PM to 6 AM and will remain in force for two months.
The Meghalaya government has imposed a night curfew along the Indo-Bangladesh international border in three districts, East Khasi Hills, West Jaintia Hills, and East Jaintia Hills, to prevent illegal cross-border activities.
The night curfew will be in place daily from 8 PM to 6 AM and will remain in force for two months from the date of its issuance- May 8, 2025.
The decision comes amid concerns over potential infiltration by members of proscribed militant groups, smugglers, and other unlawful elements, taking advantage of the porous and largely unfenced nature of the border in these regions.
According to the official order, the curfew restricts the movement of individuals intending to cross into Bangladesh or enter Indian territory illegally. It also prohibits unauthorised gatherings of five or more people, processions, and the carrying of arms or objects that could be used as weapons near the international border.
The order explicitly bans smuggling activities involving cattle, contraband goods, betelnut, betel leaves, dry fish, bidis, cigarettes, and tea leaves.
The curfew’s scope varies across the districts:
In East Khasi Hills, it covers areas within one kilometre of the Zero Line.
In East Jaintia Hills, it is enforced up to 500 metres from the border.
In West Jaintia Hills, the curfew extends up to 200 metres from the Zero Line.
Authorities have urged residents to cooperate with enforcement measures aimed at enhancing border security and curbing illegal activities in sensitive areas.
