Former senior leader of BJP in Meghalaya and former Mawsynram MLA, HM Shangpliang who has resigned from the primary membership of the party on Wednesday, will join National People’s Party (NPP) on September 13, 2023.

Addressing a press conference in Shillong today, Shangpliang confirmed the date of his joining and said that no condition was put before the NPP.

Speaking to media Shangpliang has said that his decision to quit the BJP was driven by his frustration with the party’s leaders’ ignorance.

Shangpliang said that he had tried many times to discuss the issues of internal conflicts of the party and the charges of nepotism on state BJP president, Ernest Mawrie, but he got no response from the top party leaders other than ignorance.

Shangpliang said, “After the assembly elections concluded in the state, I tried 3 times to get an appointment with Assam Chief Minister and NEDA convener Himanta Biswa Sarma but could not get. I also tried to connect with party national secretary Rituraj Sinha but he did not answer any of my calls, and I have not yet gotten a response from him. Lastly, I reached out to Meghalaya Deputy CM and NPP leader Sniawbhalang Dhar and briefed him about this and quit the party.”

“I want to serve the people of my state, and for that I need a platform to do that. I was looking for BJP to give me that platform, but despite my best efforts, I did not get it,” he added.

Shangpliang also said that his supporters will join the NPP in Mawsynram on September 12, 2023.
