Meghalaya Health Minister Dr. M. Ampareen Lyngdoh has dismissed allegations of negligence against Nongpoh Civil Hospital after the tragic death of a newborn who died after being born inside a toilet of the Hospital.
According to Dr. Lyngdoh, the mother, Monalisa Langi, who was less than five months pregnant, suffered a spontaneous miscarriage, making it impossible to save the child.
The incident happened on Saturday evening when Monalisa was brought to the Hospital after she complained of severe pain.
The Minister assigned a senior officer of the rank of Joint Director to investigate the incident, with a full report expected soon. Dr. Lyngdoh reiterated the government’s commitment to transparency and improving healthcare services across the state.
A senior health official has already visited the Hospital to gather information, and the Medical Superintendent of Nongpoh Civil Hospital is expected to release a formal statement in the coming days, Minister added.
Monalisa Langi, a resident of Umden Diwon, had initially been taken to Umden Primary Health Centre (PHC) after experiencing severe pain. She was referred to Nongpoh Civil Hospital on the night of September 20 and admitted at around 3 AM on September 21, where she received medical attention. She went to the toilet and suddenly gave birth to the child who died soon after.
