Meghalaya Health Dept Assures Strict Action In Case of Lapses in Death of a Pregnant Woman in Jowai

Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has also taken Suo Motu cognizance pertaining to the unfortunate death of a pregnant woman and her unborn child.
The Health and Family Welfare Department of Meghalaya has made it clear that strict disciplinary action will be taken against anyone found responsible for any lapses or negligence in the treatment provided to Pynche Bareh, a pregnant woman who tragically passed away at the Maternity and Child Hospital in Jowai on June 4.
According to departmental reports, the patient’s family had requested a transfer to another hospital. However, delays in completing discharge formalities, combined with a sudden deterioration in the patient’s condition, prevented the transfer from being carried out in time.
Addressing media persons on Friday, Director of Health Service (MCH & FW) LE Kharsahnah said, “The root cause analysis is in progress to identify any gap in the system response or procedural lapses. If the inquiry reveals any negligence or failure in clinical care appropriate disciplinary action will be taken against the concerned personnel.”
Presently a four-member fact-finding committee is investigating the matter.
LE Kharsahnah further said that the Health and Family Welfare Department, Meghalaya is fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation and has submitted all necessary medical records and documents to the inquiry team. Kharsahnah, expressed serious concern over the incident and affirmed that measures would be adopted to prevent such tragedies from recurring in the future.
LE Kharsahnah said, “The department reiterated its commitment to transparency, accountability and patient safety and we will take corrective action as required to strengthen maternal health protocols across all public health institutions.”
On the otherhand, Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has also taken Suo Motu cognizance pertaining to the unfortunate death of a pregnant woman and her unborn child. The Commission has issued a notice to the Principal Secretary, Health and Family Welfare, Government of Meghalaya, to cause an effective enquiry and to submit a detailed inquiry report to the Commission by June 9.
Significantly, an FIR has been lodged and a formal investigation by the police and magisterial inquiry is also monitored by the Deputy Commissioner, West Jaintia Hills.
