The relocation process is set to commence on February 7, with the government aiming to balance legal compliance with the interests of vendors

Amid strong opposition to the proposed relocation of hawkers, Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, in charge of Urban Affairs, has assured the public that the state government is strictly following legal protocols in addressing the ongoing hawker relocation issue in Shillong.

Speaking on the matter, Dhar emphasised the government’s commitment to building consensus among stakeholders and including all voices in the decision-making process.

Dhar said, “About these hawkers, we will do everything according to the law. That’s not an issue; we will try to take everybody on board. If there is some complication, we will solve it. The government is doing everything according to the law. We are not only working based on the law, but we are also trying to take everyone into confidence. It may be an issue—they may not like some of the places but for that also, we are ready to adjust here and there.”

While acknowledging the challenges in the relocation process, Dhar highlighted the government’s readiness to address complications and make adjustments where necessary to address concerns.

His remarks follow protests by the Meghalaya & Greater Shillong Progressive Hawkers and Street Vendors Association (MGSPHSVA) outside the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) office. The protests oppose the relocation of vendors from Khyndai Lad to three newly designated vending zones, as per an SMB notice.

The relocation process is set to commence on February 7, with the government aiming to balance legal compliance with the interests of vendors and the community.
