Meghalaya : GSMC co-chairman, Balkarin Marak arrested in connection with Tura violence

Achik Conscious Holistic Integrated Krima (ACHIK) and Garoland State Movement Committee co-chairman Balkarin Ch Marak wanted in connection with the July 24 attack on the mini secretariat in Tura during chief minister Conrad K Sangma’s meeting, has been arrested on Sunday from the village of Bansamgre in East Garo Hills.

Balkarin Ch Marak had been absconding since the high court rejected their bail.

General secretary of ACHIK, advocate Bernita Ch Marak is still absconding. Laben Marak, former MCS officer and advisor to ACHIK had been arrested on August 17 for his role in fomenting the Tura violence.

Balkarin Marak and Labenn Marak along with Bernita Marak had participated in an indefinite hunger strike to demand the winter capital of the state in Tura.

Accepting their demand to discuss the chief minister’s mini secretariat, next to the venue of their hunger strike, the chief minister cancelled the earlier proposed meeting at the circuit house and arrived at the mini secretariat on the afternoon of July 24.

But, barely had discussions begun that the crowd outside became agitated and the mob soon turned violent indulging in widespread stone pelting and attacks, both on the mini secretariat, police and government officials not sparing civilian vehicles or pedestrians too.
