Meghalaya Govt’s big solar energy push; earmarks Rs 100 cr annually for Solar Energy Mission

The mission is aimed at addressing the power scarcity that the state is facing and moving towards more sustainable energy solutions
In a significant stride towards sustainable energy adoption, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma inaugurated the Chief Minister’s Solar Mission at the State Convention Centre, Shillong, on Friday. The initiative, aimed at revolutionizing Meghalaya’s energy landscape, seeks to blend state-of-the-art technology with innovative financing models to encourage the widespread use of green energy sources. The Chief Minister pledged substantial subsidies and announced an annual investment of Rs 100 crore for the mission, reinforcing the government’s commitment to a greener future.
Speaking at the event, Chief Minister Sangma highlighted the transformative approach of the solar mission. “Unlike previous endeavours, we are addressing the problem with a solution-based approach. Our focus is on solving the power supply challenges faced by many villages and tackling the issue of load shedding,” he stated.
One of the core components of the initiative is the distribution of individual household hybrid systems equipped with battery backups. These systems will ensure an uninterrupted power supply for 8 to 10 hours and will be recharged by solar panels. This approach not only addresses power shortages but also promotes the use of renewable energy sources.
Furthermore, the Chief Minister announced plans to establish LED assembling units across various regions of the state. These units will foster local employment opportunities and encourage entrepreneurship. “Our state will witness the establishment of LED assembly lines, generating employment for our youth and entrepreneurs,” Chief Minister Sangma remarked.
The government has also engaged with battery manufacturers to set up manufacturing units within the state, emphasizing the holistic approach towards enhancing the local energy ecosystem. With an integrated focus on LED and battery production, Meghalaya is poised to become a self-reliant hub for sustainable energy solutions.
The Chief Minister’s Solar Mission is poised to become one of the most ambitious and expansive energy initiatives in the country. As the program unfolds, it aims to not only revolutionize energy consumption patterns but also stabilize power supply throughout the state.
Chief Minister Sangma expressed confidence in the mission’s success and its potential to reshape the energy scenario in Meghalaya. “Over the next two to three years, we anticipate a remarkable transformation in the power landscape of our state,” added CM Sangma.
