CM Sangma emphasized that the people of Meghalaya considered the land and its resources to be theirs, leading them to mine in ways they believed to be correct.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has affirmed that the state government has been working behind the scenes, to address setbacks including economic impacts on the state and its people, as a direct result of the 10-year ban on coal mining by the National Green Tribunal. Speaking at a workshop on enhancing mineral exploration in the region, Chief Minister Sangma said the ban has abruptly disrupted the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of families in the state, who had traditionally practiced coal mining for over 200 years. He emphasized that the people of Meghalaya considered the land and its resources to be theirs, leading them to mine in ways they believed to be correct, without realizing the environmental concerns.
