Meghalaya Govt to shift District jail to New Shillong Township

The Minister said that the jail will be constructed on a 25-acre plot of land at NST and will have a capacity to hold with 1000 inmates

Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister who is also in charge of Home (Prisons) and Urban Affairs, Sniawbhalang Dhar, today said that the District jail will soon to shifted to New Shillong Township in a bid to decongest Shillong city.

“Today, I have visited the jail, and we have decided to shift the jail to New Shillong Township. The decision has been made, and we will soon begin the process of transferring the jail to that area. Our aim is to ensure that the city remains peaceful, nice, and clean,” Dy CM Dhar told media persons.

The Minister said that the jail will be constructed on a 25-acre plot of land at NST and will have the capacity to hold with 1000 inmates. The land where the jail stands at present will be given to the Urban Affairs Department while the Jail will take over the Urban’s land at NST.

The minister also inspected the ongoing construction of the Meghalaya Transport Corporation (MTC) building, situated at Jail Road near Khyndai Lad in Shillong.

Expressing his contentment with the progress, he said, “The project is proceeding smoothly, and I will make every effort to ensure that the building is handed over to the concerned authorities within the next two years.”
