Meghalaya Govt hopes to resolve Harijan Colony relocation issue within Jan: Dy CM Sniawbhalang Dhar

Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, who is also in charge of the Urban Affairs department today said that the state government is hoping to resolve the issue pertaining to the relocation of 342 families of Sweepers’ Colony from Them Iew Mawlong within this month.

He said that the State government is likely to hold a meeting with the Harijan Panchayat Committee (HPC) regarding this by next week.

The Deputy Chief Minister said that the meeting will be called once Prestone Tynsong, the chairperson of the High powered committee, returns to Shillong.

Speaking to Northeast Live, Dhar said, “More or less, we will discuss with them regarding the matter in the next meeting this month. As soon as Prestone Tynsong returns to Shillong, we will be calling them (HPC) to discuss the matter once again and probably it will indirectly be a final discussion.”

Earlier in December last year, the Meghalaya Government engaged in discussions with the HPC regarding the proposed relocation plan suggesting the relocation of 342 families from a disputed area to land owned by the Shillong Municipal Board.

The State government has given an area of 2.14 acres within the existing building of the municipal board for their relocation. Additionally, it has included another 1.4 acres of land opposite the existing one, bringing the total to 3.6 acres.

Earlier, General Secretary of Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee, Jagdeep Singh, said, “While Meghalaya government is working in a positive direction and we are satisfied to some extent, there are still some unresolved issues that need to be addressed.”

HPC Chairman Gurjeet Singh said that the presented blueprint is okay, but nothing has been finalized yet. Some five issues are still not resolved.
